OUTSTANDING RED LAKE NATION TEEN TO COMPETE FOR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA’S STATE YOUTH OF THE YEAR
Red Lake, MN, Feb. 16th, 2010 - Cody James Roberts is a true example of an extraordinary young man. At age 16, he has just been selected to compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Minnesota Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation. As the Youth of the Year for Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club, Cody Roberts is among hundreds of local youth across the country recognized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation.
At sixteen years of age and attending 10th grade at the Red Lake High School, Cody now holds a part-time job after school at the Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club, which is sponsored through the MNCep Program that began as a summer job. When he’s not working or volunteering, Cody is involved in the many Programs the Club has to offer where he is also a registered member of the Club. Descending from two respected grandfathers, one serves as one of the seven Hereditary Chiefs for the tribe and the other a former Tribal Chairman. Cody continues their cultural involvement being a Red Lake Tribal member, and recognizes his dodem, the Kingfisher Clan. He looks forward to his future of pursuing a career in Game Design Technology at a University, but in the meantime he loves playing basketball and spending time with his brothers and sisters.
“Cody Roberts is truly an inspiration to all of our youth. His continued commitment to the Club, service to the Community and leadership to youth is a fine example of what our missions is; ‘To inspire and enable all young people, especially those from the Red Lake Nation, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.’ Congratulations Cody! You’ll go far!” said Rebecca Wierschke, Chief Professional Officer of the Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club.
If Cody Roberts wins at the state competition, he will compete for the title of the Midwest Region Youth of the year and an additional $10,000 scholarship. The five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September 2010, to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 scholarship and is installed by the President in an Oval Office Ceremony.
